Chances are it wasn’t much different from any week in 2011. That is of course unless you made a conscious choice to change your thoughts and your habits.
I hope we all didn’t get excited about a new year and forget that WE are the ones who will actually be making it the best year ever, the most difficult or just like all the rest.
Derek and I leave for Albania in 22 days.
We decided that this year would be unlike any other year before or after. We decided that it was time to start yet another adventure and we are thrilled!
I’ll never forget a comment from a client and friend when we left Tucson in November of 2010. She said…
I don’t know why you can’t stay here. Moving around all the time is very immature.
I remember my first trip to Albania. I was twenty two years old and although I had already traveled to seven or eight countries, I was looking forward to living overseas. Everyone who thought I was crazy, told me and everyone who envied me told me I was crazy. (It took me awhile to figure this out.)
But the most common thing I was told was this…
Do it while you’re young because you can’t travel once you get married and have a family.
Derek and I have been hearing similar things as we get closer to our departure date. Many say things like, oh I would do that too if I was young. I would do that too if I owned my own business. I would do that too if I had the money. I would do that too if…
How long are we going to make excuses for why our lives are boring?
Really, this is not a rhetorical question. When are we going to realize that the excuses we tell ourselves and other people DO NOT keep us from the adventure we crave? We keep ourselves from the adventure we crave and our excuses simply justify our lack of adventure.
The only sure fire way I know to make 2012 different is to start a new adventure.
Move to a place you’ve always wanted to live.
Start a business.
Get a hobby.
Plan a trip to a new place.
Eat different foods.
Make new friends.
Create a new schedule.
Do something different.
You might be thinking, I don’t know how. The way to learn HOW to do something is by doing it. Let this be the sign you’ve been looking for, the kick in the pants you want – go DO something that terrifies you, that makes you feel like if your friends knew what you’re up to they’d think you lost it!
Adventure is exciting because we don’t entirely know what to expect. We don’t know exactly how things will work out. We don’t know for sure if we’ll even like it. If what’s on your mind to do feels like all of these things, DO IT, you’re on the right track.
And let me just say for the record, you can start a new adventure if you’re single, married, divorced, with a half a dozen kids or none at all. You can start an adventure at 17 or 82. You can start an adventure with no money or a bank full. Adventure is available to anyone who wants it and reaches out and grabs it.
So what are you waiting for?
Grab It and make 2012 different.
Make it a year worth remembering.
Hungry for More, Monique Alvarez p.s. If there are typos, spelling or grammar mistakes in this post don’t worry about. Those are the kinds of things I’ve worried about for FAR too long. It’s time to just get it out and who cares if it’s not perfect, it’s from the heart!
