When I wrote Celebrate Life 365 Ways last year, I mentioned that I would like to create a daily calendar that featured each celebration. Derek introduced me to Kickstarter, which is a funding platform for creative projects such as this.
Basically you let people know about your project and they make a donation that enables you to create it. They in turn receive one of the products you create. I was thrilled to register for an account, record a video and get rolling. Just about the time I thought I was ready to tell the world about it, Derek had a suggestion.
It would be really cool if you would draw an illustration to go with each celebration.
Is he out of his mind?!
Come up with 365 drawings?
In time for a 2013 calendar?
To top it all off, I don’t draw!
In true Derek form, he was completely unfazed by my doubts.
You can do it.
I’ll help you create a template.
Just draw like a child from your heart.
I decided to stick to paper, pencil and an eraser. (I use a marker last in order to scan it.) No tools whatsoever. The perfectionist in me wasn’t going to take all the fun out of this. There would be no perfectly round circles, perfectly centered text or any straight lines.
Raw, real and creative became the mantra for my biggest creative undertaking.
I have to tell you, drawing the illustrations for this calendar has been such an amazing experience for me. I had no idea what was inside of me until I sat down and allowed it to flow. I have learned that some days the muse visits me and I’ll have endless inspiration. I might draw 15 or 20. Other days, it’s not present so I wait for it to return. I’m realizing that I can draw. I couldn’t draw before because I refused to. Everyone can draw – everyone who slows their mind long enough and listens to their intuition, can draw.
I’m on #141 today. (224 to go)
Each day I’m posting them here, on my Facebook page and on Pinterest. When I finish the illustrations I’ll be sharing my project on Kickstarter and by October or November they will be available.
If I can do it, you can do it.

There is not a better feeling in the world than approaching something new with the wonder of a child and enjoying it for what it is.
Hungry for More, Monique Alvarez *Have you downloaded my free ebook, The Hungry Soul’s Manifesto? It’s all about remembering what’s important in life – creating purpose and passion, instead of just passing the time amassing stuff. p.s. If there are typos, spelling or grammar mistakes in this post don’t worry about. Those are the kinds of things I’ve worried about for FAR too long. It’s time to just get it out and who cares if it’s not perfect, it’s from the heart!
