What on earth is trash doing in this beautiful scene?!
This is the tale of how a dirty beach lit a fire under me bum and put me on a mission to clean my city.
My husband Derek, my brother-in-law Danny, and I live in Durres, Albania. It’s there first time leaving the U.S. but it’s like coming back home for me. I can’t speak for them but I love living here.
What exactly do I love, you ask?
The slow pace of life….it’s S L O W.
The moderate weather…it’s 66 and sunny today.
The ocean…I could watch the waves all day.
The food…simple, fresh and locally grown.
And most of all, the people…passionate, honest, funny, kind and family-oriented.
However, after being here for a couple weeks the papers tossed in a corner of our building started annoying me. The wrappers on the street were irritating me. The plastic bottles on the beach, now those pissed me off! I decided that since I had so much emotion around the dirty beach, it would be the perfect place to start my work
Everyday that it’s nice outside I grab my trash bags, gloves and keys.
A little crowd gathers near me and the conversations are always interesting. I overhear everything from what it means to be a hard worker, to who’s responsibility it is to clean the beach, to how much I’m getting paid. I have to tell you, I love my time cleaning the beach because I always make a new friend.
Doing the right thing doesn’t make us heros, it makes us humans.
So far I’ve picked up 16 bags of trash on my little piece of paradise. I’ve got a long way to go. I need to recruit a team to join me. I must stop using plastic (bags, bottles etc.) myself. But it’s begun and that is often the hardest thing to do.
I didn’t plan on being Captain Clean when I moved here.
I didn’t choose this mission as much as it chose me.
But the thing is, if we don’t like something, it’s up to us to change it.
And if we aren’t part of the solution, we’re part of the problem.
What about you?
Are you on a mission?
Hungry for More, Monique Alvarez p.s. If there are typos, spelling or grammar mistakes in this post don’t worry about. Those are the kinds of things I’ve worried about for FAR too long. It’s time to just get it out and who cares if it’s not perfect, it’s from the heart! p.s.s. My book Celebrate Life 365 Ways is now available at Amazon.com (both the paperback and Kindle edition). Thank you for joining the celebration! ;)
