That’s right…I’ll be interviewing cool people, who are doing what they love and making a difference in their world.
Today’s interview is with Mitchell Dillman, creator of Colorado Rock-n-Logs™. Derek and I met Mitchell online a couple of years ago and I have the highest respect for him. His heart and his art are truly inspiring!

Tell me about your business?
I create and share uniquely handcrafted, modern-rustic, log furniture. Early on in 2011, I decided to leverage the internet and make it a big part of my business in order to teach anyone who is interested, everything there is to know about log furniture; how to make log furniture for themselves, how to care for log furniture, even what to look for when purchasing it. So, I guess it is safe to say, log furniture is my business and I am excited to share this with you.
Awesome! Why did you start your business?
While log furniture has always been a sincere passion, it has not always been my business. You see, ever since the early 1980’s, after graduating from high school, I have been involved with construction. Custom building spectacular new homes throughout Colorado and the Southwestern United States has always been my life’s focus and livelihood. But not unlike millions of others, the past several years of my life has been full of dramatic change and exciting personal growth. I started my new business out of my sheer passion to work with my hands and teach others what I have learned. Believe me, there is no better way to live your life than doing what you love to do and sharing that with others.
Tell me what you feel is your business’ purpose?
I am building a gathering place for all those interested in log furniture. This is a place where you will learn and share while enjoying many magnificant types of rustic home furnishings, fixtures and decor. It is my vision to help new furniture designers develop their craft while offering them a platform to share their creative, functional works of art for many more to enjoy.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
If there is one thing I have learned as a construction contractor, when you ‘work’ for yourself, you are never ‘not working’. If there is another thing I have learned as an artisan; there is no such thing as ‘work’ when you are creating smiles. And if there is something else I am learning as a teacher, is that there has never a better time to ‘work’ than now.
How do you want to impact the world?
Let’s face it, the log furniture business is not what one typically thinks of when considering shaking the world. However, look beyond the sawdust and calloused hands, you will see there is much more to this story than a simple guy with a log bench. As pioneers of eCommerce each of us now has the ability to suddenly impact the world. Successful strategies implemented today will be studied tomorrow. There is now a new model for many in business to follow. I am building that model.
Why did you choose to use the internet, specifically YouTube?
Two and a half years ago I was an out-of-work carpenter with my first laptop. I had a somewhat vaque plan. One year ago I made a conscious decision to study and learn YouTube. Without YouTube it may have taken years to do what I have accomplished in months. Websites like YouTube offer anyone with a video camera and a smile the ability to reach out to more folks in a single day than many small businesses are used to seeing come through their doors in a year. Building my channel and interacting with my subscribers is what it’s all about.
What makes your business stand out from others?
Look around. Not only have times changed, the manner in which businesses interact and attract new customers is rapidly evolving. Social media is quickly dictating a new, unprecedented marketing strategy for many in business. When you start a new business with this in mind it can’t help but allow you to stand out. It is no longer as simple as having a static website. To become successful today you must interact, engage, and most of all, include your customers in your business. That is what I do at Colorado Rock*N Logs.
How can my readers support you and your business?
The real question is, “How may I support your readers?” My log furniture business is based on sharing and interaction with others via the internet. By helping others we only help ourselves. If anyone has any questions not just about log furniture, but marketing your business on the internet or using YouTube, since that’s my forte, consider me your best friend. I am here to help you. Please come see me at my website http://logfurniturehowto.com and find me on Twitter and Facebook.
