As you can imagine it takes some focus to sell everything you own and move out of the country. So I made a point to limit my time on the phone, email and Facebook. Now that we are settled into our new place I’m going through things to see if there’s anything I want to reply to.
The interesting thing is that everyone from close friends to perfect strangers have been sending me almost the same exact question…
What are you going to do in Albania?
After about the third or fourth time it dawned on me that we are trained to need to know everything before we take the first step. We are supposed to take the first step only after we have the next twenty steps planned. Everyone teaches us to be responsible and hard working but have we forgotten to how to live courageously? Are we now too smart and technologically advanced to live by faith?
I bought the plane ticket before I knew what I was going to do once I got here.
Sometimes old habits die hard and for this planner it took six years of “trying to figure it out” to just take the first step. The whole staircase isn’t going to illuminate all at once. Trust me, I waited a long time for that moment and it never arrived.
If the first step is the only thing you know for sure, it’s enough, take it!
As for the answer to my most frequently asked question…
I’m looking forward to finding out myself.
For now I’m sleeping in.
Taking long walks.
Laughing with family.
And eating lots of cream puffs.
The truth is I’m finding this trip to be very different from any other I’ve taken around the world. I’m not going to be springing into action any time soon. I know that hurts American ears but I’m not. No, I’m going to enjoy this part. Just being here is enough for me right now.
So there it is.
Take the first step.
And enjoy how that feels.
Hungry for More, Monique Alvarez p.s. If there are typos, spelling or grammar mistakes in this post don’t worry about. Those are the kinds of things I’ve worried about for FAR too long. It’s time to just get it out and who cares if it’s not perfect, it’s from the heart!
